A PI’s Guide to Dogs
As private investigators, we're no strangers to unexpected twists and turns... But what happens when these surprises come with wagging tails and wet noses?
Yes… I'm talking about dogs. 🐶
Encountering dogs during investigations isn't merely a possibility. It's a given. And how we handle these encounters can influence not just our safety but also the success of our investigations.
We’ve made a quick guide to managing those 4-legged encounters with care and maybe finding unexpected companionship along the way!
Let’s start with do’s and don'ts:
Don’t:
Run (you become prey) or make sudden movements.
Attempt to dominate the dog.
Stare. Direct eye contact can be seen as a challenge.
Turn your back, losing situational awareness.
Try to pet, lean down, or offer your hand.
Lean over a dog.
Assume a wagging tail means friendliness.
Ignore warning signs like growling or barking.
Do:
Wait in your car if a dog seems aggressive until the owner can secure them.
Approach all unfamiliar dogs with caution, especially if they seem nervous or defensive. (Not all dogs are friendly.)
Keep treats handy as a peace offering. Remember to toss them on the ground rather than offering by hand.
Avoid eye contact, looking away to show you're not a threat.
Treat witnesses' dogs warmly to build rapport, petting them if they're receptive.
By following these dos and don'ts, you can navigate dog encounters in the field with confidence and safety. This approach can turn a nerve-wracking situation into a chance for making a new furry friend. A little patience goes a long way!
Alright, cute story time…
One of our own investigators, Jessy, recently fell in love with a furry companion during an investigation. While leaving the scene, she stumbled upon a local animal shelter and couldn't resist popping in to say hello. Now, she has a loyal new pup who's not just a pet but a part of the AKI team!
Sometimes, the best finds are those that find us.
