How to Vet a Private Investigator Like a Pro

In our previous blog post, we showed you where to find potential private investigators.

The next crucial step is vetting them to make sure they're the right fit for your case.

Let’s look at the steps you can take to help you assess whether a PI can meet your high standards and specific needs:

1. Review their CV.

A detailed CV is your first insight into an investigator's background, expertise, and experience. Look for relevant experience that aligns with the type of cases you handle.

2. Ask for references.

Request references from attorneys who have worked with the investigator on similar cases. Make the effort to contact these references, as they can give you invaluable insights into the investigator's effectiveness, reliability, and work ethic.

3. Assess cultural and case-specific fit.

Every case has unique needs, and so does every client. Consider whether the investigator's background and approach are suitable. For instance, it can be advantageous to hire a female PI for a delicate interview with a rape accuser. Or an investigator who has experience working with mentally ill or intellectually disabled clients and witnesses if that's an issue in your case.

4. Dive deep with key questions.

To get a real sense of how an investigator operates, ask probing questions:

  • How do you establish trust and maintain a relationship with your client?

  • How do you communicate and document case updates?

  • How do you store case materials?

  • Tell me about some of the best practices in investigations that you implement in your work.

These questions are designed to elicit responses that reveal the investigator's professionalism, integrity, and alignment with your case needs.

Remember, the goal is to find an investigator who not only has the skills and experience necessary but also the right approach and values that match your and your client's expectations.
